TECHNOLOGY OF THE FUTURE

HISTORY

Until 200 years ago, riding express messengers were the fastest way of trans- mitting messages over large distances. Nowadays it has become commonplace to communicate with the remotest places on earth without time delay. Telephone, telefax, the internet and e-mail are the media for a highly efficient and extremely fast telecommunication system, eliminating space and time distances with its global network. It represents the idea of a globally linked „One World“ dating back to the 19th century. Back then it became theore-tically possible to communicate over larg- est distances in real-time.

Telegraphy (since the mid-19th century)

Telephony (since the end of the 19th century)

Radio communication ( first steps of wireless transmission of signals by means of electromagnetic waves since the beginning of the 20th century)

Telefax circa since World War I

Modem: maximum 56 kbit/s

ISDN: 64 kbit/s, 128 kbit/s when both B channels are used, 2 Mbit/s with primary

multiple connection

ADSL: 384 kbit/s down- and 64 kbit/s upstream (DSL „light“), up to 25 Mbit/s down- and 3,5 Mbit/s upstream (ADSL 2+)

VDSL: 25 Mbit/s up to 52 Mbit/s, occasionally up to 100 Mbit/s downstream and 5 Mbit/s to 20 Mbit/s upstream

DOCSIS (TV cable): 1.60+ Gbit/s dpwnstream

Fibre (fibre optics): 1+ Gbit/s downstream

COMMUNICATION NET STRUCTURE

In order to make fibre optics usable for communication services of third party provid- ers, several structural steps are required

APPLICATION OF FIBRE OPTICS

For the operation of telephone networks, copper cable grids were constructed. Depending on the bandwidth demand, copper cables will be replaced by fibre optics:
